Meet the Florist:

Hi, I’m Vanessa.

I came to floral design somewhat unexpectedly.

I moved to San Francisco in 2012 to study Zoology, earning a Bachelor of Science before an opportunity to create weekly floral arrangements for a downtown restaurant quietly changed the course of my life. What began through curiosity and instinct grew into a practice—and eventually, Unwritten Florals.

I founded Unwritten in 2018 without formal floral training or a predetermined aesthetic. I learned by doing: studying how flowers move, how color changes in different light, how scale transforms a space, and when a design becomes more powerful by leaving something undone. That curiosity still shapes the way I work today.

Unwritten is a name rooted in possibility. In stories still unfolding, spaces waiting to be transformed, and experiences that haven't happened yet but will eventually become memories. It’s where our philosophy of Storytelling Without Words begins.

Today, I lead Unwritten Florals from our San Francisco studio, approaching each celebration with an editorial eye and a deep consideration for the people and places at its center. I’m interested in more than beautiful flowers—I think about architecture, landscape, movement, material, proportion, and the way a space should feel when someone enters it.

The studio has grown considerably from the little garage where it began, but the instinct behind the work hasn't changed: stay curious, pay attention, and create something that couldn't quite belong anywhere else.

Floral storytelling, shaped by people and places.

Accepting and engaging with the fleeting nature of life allows Vanessa to design with a sense of patience, free-spiritedness, and expressive appreciation for flowers.

A little life update—

These days, Unwritten calls San Francisco’s Outer Sunset home. My partner Jeff and I opened a shared floral studio and barbershop here in the neighborhood we’ve called home for years—an unlikely pairing that somehow feels entirely like us.

It’s where flowers arrive by the bucket, ideas become installations, and Unwritten’s work takes shape before heading out into the world. Alongside it, Jeff welcomes his own community into the barbershop each week.

Two crafts, one space, and a little corner of San Francisco we’re very grateful to call ours.

“Her designs are incredibly unique and organic; I can always tell when an arrangement or bouquet is made by her because of her distinct, beautiful style. She is a true artist, creating magic every single time. She is a complete joy to work with and I can't recommend her enough!”

The act of arranging flowers is an ancient practice and it’s no surprise how emotive and captivating they can be. I’m here to be the translator, the connector of your story, my story, and Mother Nature’s.
