Unwritten is a floral studio based in San Francisco, using flowers as a medium to celebrate life in all of its complexity and subtlety.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
People, places, and flowers themselves.
I’m endlessly curious about the way people see color, the places they feel connected to, and the tiny details they notice without realizing it. I’m equally inspired by the strange shapes, movement, imperfections, and seasonality of flowers. Somewhere between all of that is usually where the good stuff starts.
WHAT IS YOUR COMPANY ETHOS?
Good flowers, good people, and doing the work thoughtfully.
We source locally whenever it makes sense, reuse mechanics, sort and compost floral waste whenever possible, and try not to consume something simply because it's convenient. We aren't perfect at it, but we're always paying attention.
The same goes for our designs. We'd rather make something considered and memorable than follow a trend simply because it's having a moment.
SO, WHY “UNWRITTEN”?
I started Unwritten in 2018 with no real idea where it was going. I was working out of my garage, teaching myself as I went, and the name felt appropriate for a future I couldn't quite see yet.
Eventually, it took on another meaning. Flowers became a language for me—a way of saying something about a person, a place, a memory, or a moment without having to explain it. That's where Storytelling Without Words came from, and it's still at the center of how I design today.
WHERE DOES THE MAGIC HAPPEN?
San Francisco's Outer Sunset.
Unwritten shares a studio with my partner Jeff's barbershop—which sounds slightly random until you see it. It's where our flowers arrive, designs get created, and most of my ideas start taking shape.
We aren't a traditional flower shop, but if you happen to walk by, there's a good chance you'll see something floral happening inside.

Upon graduating and receiving her bachelor's of science, life unexpectedly changed for Vanessa when an opportunity came up to design weekly flower arrangements for a restaurant downtown. What began as a hobby, quickly and serendipitously grew into a promising career….
